Prophet Description

  • Muhammad

Muhammad was born in Mecca, Saudi Arabia in 570 CE and is considered the founder of the religion of Islam. Muhammad was raised mostly by his uncle because his father, mother, and grandfather died early in his life. Muhammad grew to be a man of striking good looks and moral character. At the age of 25, Muhammad received a marriage proposal which he accepted. His first wife bore him 2 sons and 4 daughters – the most influential being his youngest daughter Fatimah. By the age of 35, Muhammad was greatly respected in Mecca because of his deep devotion to prayer. Muhammad would often leave the city to pray and it was during one of these retreats that he received the Quranic revelations.

Three years after the first of these revelations, Muhammad began preaching publicly. He taught that God is one and the complete surrender to God is the only type of worship acceptable. In the beginning of his ministry, he and his followers were opposed by Meccan tribes. However, after 8 years of battling these tribes, Muhammad and his 10,000 followers conquered Mecca. They destroyed the pagan idols in Mecca and proceeded to do the same throughout Saudi Arabia. By the time of Muhammad's death in 632 CE, most of the Arabian Peninsula had converted to Islam.
