Prophet Description

  • Jesus

Jesus was born in Bethlehem, Judea, no later than 4 BCE in the age of the Roman Empire. Little is known about the early life of Jesus, as he did not become influential until adulthood. Around the year 28 CE Jesus came into contact with John the Baptist – a leading apocalyptic prophet of the time. Jesus was baptized by John and then proceeded to enter the desert for prayer and reflection. Departing from the desert, Jesus went to Galilee where he began his public ministry and recruited followers. Jesus preached of love and social justice and is best known for teachings such as “love your neighbor as yourself” and “turn the other cheek.” According to the first three gospels, Jesus’ ministry lasted only one year, while the Gospel of John records it as three years. The short ministry was likely due to Jesus’ social-political passions, which infuriated religious authorities and Roman leaders, and led to his crucifiction. Jesus was crucified during the rule of Tiberius and prefecture of Pontius Pilate (around 30 CE).

37 'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.

The Nag Hammadi Library - Gospel of Thomas
95 If you have money, do not lend it at interest, but give [it] to one from whom you will not get it back.

The Nag Hammadi Library - Gospel of Thomas
3 If those who lead you say, 'See, the Kingdom is in the sky,' then the birds of the sky will precede you. If they say to you, 'It is in the sea,' then the fish will precede you. Rather, the Kingdom is inside of you, and it is outside of you. When you come to know yourselves, then you will become known, and you will realize that it is you who are the sons of the living Father. But if you will not know yourselves, you dwell in poverty and it is you who are that poverty.
